Meet Mayor Jean Stothert

As Omaha's 51st mayor and the first woman to hold this esteemed office, Mayor Jean Stothert has been a pioneering figure in our city's history. Since her first election in 2013, Mayor Stothert has dedicated herself to the betterment of Omaha, embarking on her third term with a commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and progress.

Mayor Stothert's leadership is defined by a steadfast focus on public safety, fiscal responsibility, economic development, and enhancing the taxpayer experience. Her tenure has seen the reduction of property tax rates four times, significant improvements in city services, and strategic growth of our city's population and tax base.

A historic investment in public safety has increased the number of police officers to a record high, reinforcing Omaha's reputation for safety and community-focused policing. Mayor Stothert's vision for infrastructure led to the "A Road Map to Better Streets" initiative, a $200 million bond issue approved by voters to address the city's aging streets.

Beyond her mayoral duties, Mayor Stothert is actively involved in community and regional planning as a board member of the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) and the Salvation Army Advisory Board. She is the honorary Chair of the Omaha Sister Cities Association and Co-Chair of the Smart  Cities Initiative.

Mayor Stothert's journey from a critical care nurse and head of cardiovascular surgery at St. Louis University to her leadership role in Omaha exemplifies her lifelong commitment to service. Since moving to Omaha in 1993, she has been a proactive community volunteer, served 11 years on the Millard Board of Education, and represented District 5 on the Omaha City Council before becoming mayor.

In 2022, Mayor Stothert and Dr. Kevin O'Rourke married, blending their families, including two children and four grandsons, further grounding her commitment to family and community.

Mayor Jean Stothert continues to lead Omaha with a vision of growth, safety, and prosperity. Her dedication to the city and its residents is unwavering, as she builds on a legacy of service and leadership for a brighter Omaha future.

I am deeply honored to serve as Omaha's first female mayor. Your support is both humbling and inspiring. My promise to you is to work tirelessly to earn your trust to make our city a source of pride, and to ensure that Omaha shines as a beacon of community and opportunity for all.
